The Right Way to Wash Your Dog's Bed

If you’re anything like us, your dog’s bed is more than a piece of furniture—it’s their cozy little kingdom. But between all those naps, zoomie crashes, and muddy paw prints, it doesn’t take long for that bed to start smelling... well, a little too lived-in.

Here’s how to wash your dog’s bed the right way—safely, effectively, and in a way that keeps your dog comfortable and your home smelling fresh.

Start with a Good Vacuum

Before tossing anything in the wash, start by vacuuming the bed with a brush or upholstery attachment. This helps remove dirt, dander, loose hair, and whatever treasures your pup might have stashed in the crevices.

Read the Label

Check the bed or cover for a care tag—many come with manufacturer instructions. Most removable covers are machine-washable, and some fully enclosed beds can be washed too (though large, bulky beds may need a trip to the laundromat for a commercial washer).

Treat Stains Naturally

Whether it’s a drool stain or a surprise accident, treat it before washing. Pet-safe enzyme sprays work wonders, but you can also make your own with:

  • 1 cup baking soda

  • 1 cup vinegar

  • 1 cup water

Mix into a spray bottle, apply to the stain, let sit for 10 minutes, and blot dry.

Wash with Care

If it’s safe for the machine, wash with a pet-friendly detergent free from dyes and perfumes. Hot water helps disinfect, but always follow the fabric care guidelines. For handwashing:

  1. Fill a tub or sink with warm water.

  2. Add 1/2 cup baking soda and soak the bed for 30 minutes.

  3. Drain, refill with water and pet-safe detergent.

  4. Gently scrub, rinse thoroughly, and squeeze (don’t wring) to avoid clumping the filling.

  5. Spin in the washer or roll in towels and press to remove excess moisture.

Let it air dry outdoors in the shade or indoors with a fan.

Keep It Fresh Between Washes

  • Vacuum weekly

  • Wash monthly (or more if needed)

  • Sprinkle with baking soda and vacuum after 30 minutes

  • Spot clean accidents right away

Pro Tip: If the bed has a removable cover, use an inner liner to protect the mattress. It’s a small addition that makes a big difference.
